USPA NEWS - over 1,000 athletes aged 15-18 are expected to compete at the Winter Youth Olympic Games 2020, which will be held January 10-19, 2020 in Lausanne - SWITZERLAND. Lausanne has a long association with the Olympics, having been home to the IOC for hundred years.
Created as a celebration of Sport Youth, Diversity and the Olympic values, the Winter Youth Olympic Games were first held in Innsbruck (AUSTRIA) in 2012. IOC preseves a century of Olympic history. The archives capture some of the most Iconic moments in Olympic history. Sitting in a basement at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, some 33,000 hours of video, 500,000 pictures and 2,000 documents amoung other archives risked decay and being lost forever.
When the preservation effort was launched in 2007 under former IOC President Jacques ROGGE, the organization discovered that a large portion of its archives faced destruction. Faded photographs were deteriorating and some films were being destroyed by the so-called "vinegar effect", where chemical in the films combined with moisture to cause corrosion.
The IOC has decided to make the material accessible to researchers and journalists who cover the games. IOC for its conservation effort will recieve an Award as the prestigious International Broadcasting Convention Award in September. The Summer 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro are expected to generate another 3,500 hours of video and additional 40,000 pictures.
